The death and funeral of Nelson Mandela

Condolences to the Nelson Mandela family, people and the Government of the Republic of South Africa were expressed by almost all state leaders, heads of international organizations and political figures from around the world.

Nelson Mandela stood and is on a par with such fighters for freedom and independence as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Gamal Abdel Nasser and other great figures of the national liberation movements of the 20th century - Mikhail Margelov , special presidential representative for cooperation with African countries ^{[17 ]} .

Nelson Mandela was a great friend of our country. Speaking in 2002 at the Lenin Peace Prize awarded to him back in 1990, he said: “The assistance of the Soviet Union and other socialist countries was particularly distinguished in the general context of international support for our struggle. The governments and peoples of the socialist camp provided material, moral and political support to our struggle in such a form and on such a scale that we are indebted for it. " Nelson Mandela, during his lifetime, became a world legend, a symbol of inflexibility and readiness for self-sacrifice in the struggle for national liberation. However, he was and until the end of his life remained an extremely modest, kind person with an amazingly nice smile, with an excellent sense of humor. I appeal to all members and supporters of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation with an appeal to honor the memory of this great fighter for freedom. A farewell ceremony with former South African President Nelson Mandela was held at the Sokker City football stadium in Johannesburg on December 10, 2013 ^[22] . This date was not chosen by chance, since it was on this day in 1996 that Mandela signed the first post-apartheid constitution ^[23] . The last time Nelson Mandela spoke here publicly at the opening of the 2010 FIFA World Cup .

The ceremony was broadcast on large screens at three other stadiums in the country and around the world. Despite heavy rain, tens of thousands of South African citizens gathered at the stadium in Johannesburg for a memorial service ^[24] .

The meeting was addressed by South African politicians and religious leaders, friends and grandchildren of Nelson Mandela.

Selfie Case

US President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmitt photographed themselves on the phone at the farewell ceremony with the ex-president of South Africa. A photograph of Obama, Cameron and Schmidt, he called "the most epic funeral selfie of all time" ^[32] .
