Description
Small bare, highly branched aquatic herbaceous plants with filiform stalks stretched out.
The leaves are oppositely located along the stems, whole and whole, usually with 3-5 prominent veins.
Inflorescences are single-flowered or two-flowered, in the axils of the leaves. Flowers on very short pedicels; the calyx is actinomorphic, with 4-5 lobes, almost not pronounced in some species. The corolla is whitish in color, almost double-lipped from the base, the lower lip is three-lobed, the upper one is smaller, whole. Stamens in number two.
Fruits are spherical-shaped boxes with two nests, occasionally single-nested. Seeds are numerous, with a wrinkled ribbed surface.
Range
Representatives of the genus are distributed from the southern United States in the north to Paraguay and northern Argentina in the south. The greatest diversity of species is observed on the Antilles .
Systematics
Systematic position
Traditionally, the genus belonged to the tribe Gratioleae of the plantain family ( Plantaginaceae ), however, molecular studies have shown the need for its transfer (as well as the genus Stemodiopsis Engl. ) To the family Linderniaceae [2] [3] .
