Biography

Born on June 20, 1909 in Dolenia Vas near Prebold, in the Savin Valley in a poor family. He graduated from vocational school with a degree in dental technician in Rogaska Slatina. In 1928 he moved to Prebold, where he was in the falcon movement (was fond of music, photography and sports), since 1932 he lived in Celje. He was an active worker in the labor movement, since 1932 he has been a member of the Communist Party. In November 1933, he was arrested and imprisoned in Maribor, from July 10, 1934 he was serving his sentence in Sremska Mitrovica. Due to poor health, he was prematurely released. He was the organizer of the first conference of the Communist Party of Slovenia, held from April 17 to 18, 1938 (in the rank of secretary of the Communist Party in the district of Celje and Savinsky Valley). He was under suspicion of the police again, but on February 7, 1940 he went underground and hid from the persecution. On June 29, 1940, at the III Conference, he was elected as a candidate for the Central Committee of the CPSU, delegated to the V All-Earth Conference of the CPSU. In May 1941, he was elected to the Central Committee of the CPSU, temporarily appointed secretary of the Styrian Krai Committee.

In the early days of the war, Slavko initiated resistance in his land, the territory of which he knew very well (however, it was also familiar to collaborators). On a bicycle, he personally traveled to cities and villages, where he personally met those who wanted to expel the invaders. Despite the ongoing violence in Celje, it was there that he held one of the meetings of the party, where volunteers were responsible for security. In mid-July 1941, in the suburbs of Maribor, Slavko took up agitation work, but on August 7 he fell into the hands of the Gestapo while trying to save his comrade-in-arms Slava Klavor . During the search, Schlander found documents in the name of Franz Weber, however, the main help in revealing Schlander was provided by the figures of the “fifth column”. During interrogations, Slavko denied the fact that the documents were false, and did not give out his real name (the Germans never found out).

On August 24, 1941, he was shot along with his comrades Franjo Vrunch and Glory Clavor at a training ground in Maribor. In 1949, he was reburied at the Cemetery of Popular Heroes in Ljubljana. On August 6, 1943 , the 6th Slovenian shock brigade was named in his honor. On October 25, 1943 he was posthumously awarded the title of People's Hero of Yugoslavia, as well as the other three Slovenes - Ivan Kavcic , Anton Tomšić and Lubomir Scherzer .
