Located in the southern part of the St. Petersburg-Glavny railway station, adjacent to the Obvodny Canal , through which the railway tracks pass through American bridges . On the opposite side of the Obvodny Canal are the St. Petersburg-Tovarny-Moskovsky station and the St. Petersburg-Moskovsky passenger depot.

History

In 1843, construction began on the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway . Simultaneously with the start of construction of the Petersburg-Moscow railway line at the Aleksandrovsky Mechanical Plant , steam locomotives and other railway rolling stock were put into mass production. The first domestic locomotives, wagons and track machines began to arrive at the depot as early as 1846, from the moment of the opening of traffic on the stretch to the Alexander Plant, eight miles long [1] .

Compiled and approved in 1842, the project was typical for the entire highway. The depot was constructed as a round building with an outer diameter of 64 meters. It housed 18 cost for parking and repair of locomotives, each 15 meters long. In the center of the building there was a turntable with a diameter of 13 meters. Above the turning circle stood a huge dome with a lantern above and windows on the sides. A barn workshop was added to the two walk-through stalls for the production of an overhaul of locomotives [2] .

Beginning in 1870, new passenger locomotives of the K-series began to arrive at the depot. All this new equipment at that time required the expansion of the Petersburg depot. In 1870, three new buildings were built. In 1871, the locomotive stalls of the round depot were extended to 18 meters. At the same time, a large "barn" was built to repair the cars.

The increase in the fleet of locomotives and the complexity of their design required an expansion of the repair base. In 1897, on the bank of the Obvodny Canal ( Embankment of the Bypass Canal 43) a new building of a “ fan ” type for 18 stalls was built. In the center of the fan was equipped with a turntable [3] . Traffic volumes continued to grow steadily, and in 1901 the number of passenger trains increased to 20 pairs per day.

During the years of Soviet power , the locomotive fleet was constantly updated, large-scale work was carried out at the depot to equip workshops for servicing new equipment. In 1957, the first diesel locomotives TE7 arrived, which allowed experienced drivers to drive passenger trains on the Leningrad-Moscow line at a speed of up to 120 km / h.

In May 1962, the fleet of electric locomotives was replenished with more powerful locomotives ČS2 , having a design speed of 160 km / h. Simultaneously with the development of high-speed electric locomotives, the depot was operated by diesel locomotives TEP10 and TEP60 . In the autumn of 1963, a new workshop for lifting repairs of electric locomotives was put into operation. Since 1965, all suburban traffic from Leningrad to Volkhov began to serve electric trains , and long-distance trains in this direction led electric locomotive CS 2 [3] .

From the mid-1970s, the depot became the flagship of high-speed traffic in the USSR , the ER200 electric train , commissioned at the Riga Carriage Works , was put into operation. Since February 2009, the locomotive depot is referred to as the TCE-8 and specializes in the operation of passenger series passenger locomotives [3] .

Operable locomotive series

At the beginning of 2019, the main traction unit for passenger trains is the EP2K six- axle DC electric locomotive , which replaced the Czechoslovak CS 2T , CS6 , CS7, and CS 200 .
