Geography
It is located on the northwestern shore of St. Lawrence Island , 63 km northwest of the city of Savung , 325 km southwest of Nome and 58 km east of the Chukchi Peninsula .
According to the US Census Bureau, the area of the community is 78.6 km², of which land is 28.2 km² and water surface is 50.4 km².
Population
According to the 2000 census, the population of the city was 649 people [5] . Racial Composition: Native Americans - 95.69%; white - 3.54%; Asians - 0.46%; representatives of two or more races - 0.31%. The proportion of people of Hispanic origin of any race was 0.31%.
The proportion of people under the age of 18 is 38.5%; from 18 to 24 years old - 10.6%; from 25 to 44 years old - 27.4%; from 45 to 64 years old - 17.6% and persons over 65 years old - 5.9%. The average age of the population is 26 years. For every 100 females there are 132.6 males; for every 100 females age 18 and over, 143.3 males.
Of the 159 households, 51.6% raised children under the age of 18, 43.4% were married couples living together, 18.2% were women without husbands, 23.3% did not have a family. 18.2% of the total number of households at the time of the census lived independently, while 0.6% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. On average, 4.08 people lead a household, and the average family size is 4.82 people.
The average income on a joint venture is $ 31,458; median household income is $ 30,625.

The city is served by Gambell Airport, which receives regular flights from Nome .
