The author of the work “The History of Ancient Socialism and Communism” (in the second edition it was called “The History of the Social Question and Socialism in the Ancient World”, German Geschichte der sozialen Frage und des Sozialismus in der antiken Welt ), with a pronounced modernization of history [3] . He argued that antiquities were not only characteristic of developed capitalist relations, but also social movements generated by these relations - socialism and communism. He paid great attention to the class struggle in Greece. Trying to trace the development of the mass social movements of ancient times, he sought to prove that writers and figures of the ancient world already had socialist ideals, and connected the socialist ideas of ancient thinkers with the moods of the masses. He believed that the socialist movement led the ancient world to decline and death [4] .
As Professor B. S. Chernyshev notes: “The trend of the entire book of Polman is reduced to the convergence of antiquity with modernity, be it in the field of theoretical constructions, be it in the field of practice. Through the collapse of the socialist constructions of antiquity, he seeks to show their complete unsuitability in life in general ” [5] .
Academician Yu. P. Frantsev indicates him among the founders of the theory of cyclism of the XIX century [6] .
