In 1994, he graduated from 8 classes of gymnasium number 1 of the city of Kirovo-Chepetsk, and in 1997 - vocational school number 6 in the specialty "electric and gas welder", then since September 1997 he worked as a specialty in the shop number 82 of JSC "Plant of Polymers" Kirovo-Chepetsk chemical plant .
In November 1997, Ozhegov was drafted into the Russian Army . He took the oath in the training unit near Samara , after which he underwent basic training there. Urgent military service was held as part of the 6th Motorized Rifle Company of the 506th Guards Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 27th Guards. motorized rifle division of the Volga Military District , stationed in the village Totskoye-2, Orenburg region . In the autumn of 1999, as part of his regiment, Sergei Anatolyevich was sent on a business trip to the North Caucasus , during which he took part in the counter-terrorist operation in the Chechen Republic .
In October 1999, the 506th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment conducted a sweep on the slopes of the Terek Range . According to intelligence on the way of the 6th company, which included Sergeant Ozhegov, there were supposed to be militant shelters, well-disguised firing points - “wolf holes” . Sergeant Ozhegov, being the deputy platoon commander, together with the platoon commander Junior Lieutenant Konstantin Sitkin rushed forward, bypassed the enemy, and when the militants opened fire on the main unit, hit them from the rear.
Sergeant Ozhegov swiftly jumped into the nearest trench, from which he led the underground passage, and, focusing on the sounds of gunfire, rushed forward. In the darkness of the underground passages, bypassing the militants who were there, he escaped to the dugout , from which the militants fired from a grenade launcher, and destroyed the enemy with an automatic burst.
After the end of the battle, it was discovered that the fortifications of the militants were a whole defensive system: well-placed trenches connected by underground passages, bunkers on two floors. If it were not for the swift and professional actions of the personnel of the 6th company, the terrorists could have resisted for a very long time. For this battle, the battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Morozov, introduced Sergeant Ozhegov and Junior Lieutenant Sitkin to the assignment of a heroic title.
At the end of October 1999, Senior Sergeant Sergey Ozhegov was demobilized, after which he returned to his hometown and got a job.
