Structure
It consists of a single chain dividing into 5 distinct domains, among which there is a domain typical of type C lectins . Molecular Weight — 74.000.
Function
It functions as a cofactor in the process of activating protein C with thrombin . Thrombomodulin, located on the membrane of endothelial cells, binds a thrombin molecule from the blood. In this case, the resulting complex accelerates the activation of protein C by a factor of 1000. Moreover, the associated thrombin is excluded from the blood coagulation system.
Pathology
Thrombomodulin is significantly reduced in certain diseases, such as atherosclerosis , which can increase blood clotting and increase the risk of thrombosis .
