Tell Bern was born in 1891 in the village of Pelham Manor ( Westchester County , New York State ). In 1912, he set the U.S. record for 2 miles (which lasted 20 years), and at the Stockholm Olympic Games he won a gold medal in the team race at 3,000 m (at the distance of 5,000 m he became 5th in the individual classification).
After graduating from Cornell University in 1912, Tell Bern began working in the field of mechanical engineering, and in 1937 became secretary general of the National Machine Tools Business Association.
