On October 14, 1971, the Hotel Del Coronado was listed on the National Register of Historic Places of the United States under number 71000181 [1] , and on May 5, 1977, it received the status of the National Historic Monument of the United States [2] .
History
The construction of the hotel was started in March 1887. The hotel received its first guests in February 1888, even before the completion of construction [3] . The first board of directors of the Coronado Beach Company hotel management company included , , Charles Heind , HW Mallett and Gills Kellogg [4] .
At that time, the Hotel Del Coronado was considered the largest building outside of New York , which used electric lighting. The hotel's lighting system was developed under the direct supervision of Thomas Edison [2] .
Hotel Del Coronado has become a popular holiday destination with celebrities. By the beginning of the 1920s, many famous actors were staying at it, including Douglas Fairbanks , Rudolph Valentino , Charlie Chaplin , Clark Gable , Errol Flynn , May West and others.
In 1920, Edward, Prince of Wales (in the future King Edward VIII) stayed at the hotel. It was speculated that it was there that he could meet his future wife Wallis Simpson for the first time, because of the intention to marry which he later abdicated [5] .
In 1927, the hotel honored the American pilot Charles Lindbergh on his successful transatlantic flight [5] .
In 1958, the Hotel Del Coronado became the location of the film " Some Like It Hot " ( Eng. Some like it hot , in Soviet and Russian box office - " Only Jazz in Jazz ") [6] [7] . Moreover, according to the scenario, the action took place in the fictional hotel “Seminole-Ritz”, located not in California, but in Miami ( Florida ) [8] .
US presidents visiting the hotel included Benjamin Harrison , William Howard Taft , Franklin Delano Roosevelt , Lyndon Johnson , Richard Nixon , Gerald Ford , Jimmy Carter , Ronald Reagan , George W. Bush , Bill Clinton , George W. Bush and Barack Obama [9] [10] .
