Kakhtan ( Arabic: قحطان ) - the founder of all the "southern" Arabs ( Kakhtanites ), the son of Eber (who was sometimes identified with the prophet Hood ). In a number of cases, Kakhtan was identified with the biblical Yoktan .
In the Islamic tradition, the descendants of Kakhtan, along with the disappeared Arabian peoples ( hell , samud , tasm , etc.) are referred to as “indigenous Arabs”, and the descendants of Adnan ( adnanites ) are referred to as “newcomers Arabs”. Kakhtanites were divided into settled (himyar) and nomadic (kahlan). After the creation of the Caliphate (in the 7th – 8th centuries), a real opposition developed among the two groups of Arab tribes [1] . Identification with the biblical Yoktan and other genealogies dating back to the Bible appeared among scribes who sought to link local Arabian traditions to the biblical historical scheme [1] . During the formation of a single Arab nationality, genealogies that united the lines of Kakhtan and Adnan were spread. These genealogies declared all Arabs the descendants of Ismail and Ibrahim . Perhaps the Muslim tradition, which contrasted the Kakhtanites and Adnanites, partially dates back to the ancient confrontation of nomadic and settled tribes [1] .
