History

In 1893, the seminarian Luigi Orione, together with three other seminarians, founded a collegium for orphans and children of the poor, dedicated to Divine Mercy. The college became the core of the new congregation, Orion became a priest in 1895, and in 1897 he began to write a charter for the priestly group. With the permission of the local bishop, Luigi Orion, and the priests who joined his religious group, they live a strict monastic life. On July 30, 1899, the first three people took monastic vows, thereby establishing a new congregation, which later took the name "Congregation of the Sons of Divine Providence." Members of the congregation continued to work in an orphan college, the number of children in which reached 200.

In 1903, the congregation was approved by the local bishop ; in 1906, the charter of the congregation was approved by Pope Leo XIII . In 1912, the name of the congregation was changed to “The Congregation of the Small Deeds of Divine Providence,” however, the order continued to be known under the old name. In June 1915, Luigi Orione founded the women's congregation, “Small Sisters, Missionaries of Mercy,” which is now known as the Orionists .

Since 1914, the congregation has expanded its field of activity from Christian education and assistance to the needy in the mission field. Between the World Wars, a number of congregation mission points were established in South America and Africa. Orionist cloisters also appeared in the USA, Great Britain, Poland, France, Spain, Switzerland and Australia.

In 1940, the founder of the congregation, Luigi Orione, died. On October 26, 1980, he was beheaded by Pope John Paul II . May 16, 2004 was counted as a saint.

Features and current status

Orionists do not have special vestments and wear vestments adopted by local diocesan priests. Like the Jesuits , upon joining the congregation, in addition to the three obligatory monastic vows, they bring a vow of obedience to the pope.

Orionists currently run orphanages, hospitals, nursing homes, youth centers, and schools. In 2012, they numbered 962 monks, of which 654 were priests. The order belongs to 171 cloisters [1] .
