Biography
Born into a poor peasant family. After graduating from a seven-year school, then until 1933 he studied at the Krasnoselsky Zootechnical College. He worked as a district state inspector for horse breeding, was responsible for the preparation and delivery of the best horses of the Red Army .
He continued his studies in 1934 at the Kiev Veterinary-Zootechnical Institute , which he graduated with honors. He was left to work at the Department of Anatomy - a senior laboratory assistant.
In the fall of 1939 he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army. He served as a veterinarian in the 71st cavalry regiment in the city of Kirsanov, Tambov Region.
Member of World War II. After the disbandment of the regiment, cavalry veterinarians were sent to different parts. S. Manziy was in the 606th howitzer artillery regiment of the 120th Rifle Division as head of the advanced veterinary station of the first artillery division. In 1942 he received the first officer rank - Guard Captain of the Veterinary Service and was transferred to the position of junior veterinarian. Since 1943 - a senior veterinarian. Then he served as the head of the medical department of the division infirmary, the head of the medical department of 311 front-line veterinarians of the 1st Ukrainian Front . He graduated from the war with the rank of major of veterinary service, served in Austria.
Upon returning to Kiev, S. Manziy from 1947 worked at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR as an assistant to V. G. Kasyanenko . He defended his candidate and doctoral dissertations. He worked as deputy director of the institute for scientific work.
Since 1963, he headed the department of evolutionary morphology of vertebrates, headed the section of zoological biomechanics. Concurrently, in 1957-1958 he worked at the Veterinary Department of the Ukrainian Agricultural Academy . In 1970-1980, he lectured at the Department of Zoology, University of Kiev .
In 1964 he created the first comparative-morphological laboratory of bionics in the USSR. He was deputy editor of the journal Vestnik Zoologii and the only morphologist from the USSR in the editorial board of the international journal Zoologische Jahrbucher, published in Germany ( Leipzig ).
He made a significant contribution to the comparative, functional, and evolutionary morphology of vertebrates. He published about 220 works, which became a new and significant contribution to science. He raised 15 candidates and 4 doctors of sciences.
He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery .
