History
Dokkyum is one of the oldest cities in the historical region of Friesland . Fortress with well-preserved ramparts and moats.
In 754, the Christian missionaries Saint Boniface and several of his disciples were killed in the vicinity of the Frankish kingdom , and the city is therefore a pilgrimage site for Catholics . In 1254, a German clergyman, Cardinal Oliver von Paderborn , preached here.
At the time of the Franks , Dokkyum was called Doccinga, Dockynchirica and Tochingea , later Dochingen .
In 1298, it received city status among the eleven Frisian cities that formed together one of the quarters of Friesland (1579-1795).
During the Eighty- Year War until 1572, the city was between the fronts of the adversaries and in the same year was burned by the Spaniards and only after the emergence of the Utrecht Union in 1579 passed to civilian life.
Dokkyum was of great strategic importance, especially in livestock and flax trade with Spain.
Between 1581 and 1582, city walls were built here. In 1597 the Admiralty of Frisia was founded in the city. Due to land reclamation and the construction of the Stroobosser trekvaart canal (1654-1656), the city lost its significance. In 1645, the fleet was moved to Harlingen .
The Dokkyum Nieuwe Zylen are the largest gateways in the province. In Dokkyum there are two characteristic for the country windmills “Zeldenrust” (1862) [3] and “De Hoop” [4] , which are available for tourists.
