The longest position was held by James Allen Rhodes , who was elected four times and served 16 years in 1963-1971 and 1975-1983. Less than all the posts were occupied by John William Brown and Nancy Hollister , each of whom served for only 11 days after their predecessors resigned to take a seat in the US Senate .

Governors

Governors of the Northwest Territory

For almost the entire 15-year history of the North-West Territory, it was led by only one governor - Arthur St. Clair . On November 22, 1802, he was removed from office by US President Thomas Jefferson . The new governor was not appointed and his duties, until taking office as the first governor of Ohio Edward Tiffin , temporarily performed by the Secretary of the Territory Charles Willing Byrd [7] . The territory of Ohio did not exist, the state of Ohio is considered the successor of the North-West Territory.

Ohio State Governors

Ohio State on March 1, 1803. Since then, the governors have been 62 people, six of whom were re-elected.

According to the first state constitution adopted in 1802, the governor was elected for two years; his term of office was limited to six years in any 8 years, starting on the first Monday of December after the elections [10] . The 1851 constitution removed the limit on the number of terms, and the inauguration was postponed to the second Monday of January of the year after the election [9] . In 1908, Ohio passed to the elections in even years, and therefore the term of office of the governor, elected in 1905, was increased by one year [11] . In 1957, an amendment to the Constitution was adopted, according to which the term of office increased to four years with the right of one re-election, and the candidate received a new right four years after his second term in a row to the governor [12] .

If the place of the governor becomes vacant, it is taken by the vice-governor of the state. In case the post of the vice-governor is also vacant, and. about. the governor becomes the chairman of the senate [13] . If the posts in both offices became vacant in the first 20 months of the term, then snap elections are scheduled for the next even year [14] . Since 1974, the governor and the vice-governor are elected one by one; before that, they could be (and often were) members of different parties [9] .

Comments

  1. ↑ St. Clair was appointed Governor of the Continental Congress [9] .
  2. Вице The office of the vice-governor was created with the adoption of the Constitution of 1851, and the first vice-governor took office in 1852.
  3. ↑ Fractional deadlines for some governors should not be taken absolutely literally; rather, they are intended to show individual cases where the governors were not in service for the full term due to resignation, death, etc.
  4. ↑ 1 2 3 4 Resigned to take a seat in the US Senate .
  5. ↑ 1 2 3 4 Held the position of governor as speaker of the state senate to complete the remaining term.
  6. Р The 1808 election was actually won by Return Meigs Jr. , but he was denied the right to take office because of the demand for settlement.
  7. ↑ He retired to take up the post of US Postmaster General .
  8. ↑ Retired to take up the post of ambassador to Mexico.
  9. ↑ 1 2 The term of office of William Bebba officially ended in December 1848. However, due to the large number of elections in that year in which the candidates had almost equal chances, the General Assembly postponed the inauguration of the elected governor Siberi Ford, and William Bebb remained in the office for several more weeks.
  10. В Woods ’first term was shortened to one year due to the adoption of the 1851 Constitution, which shifted the elections one year back to odd-numbered years.
  11. ↑ Retired to take up the position of consul in Valparaiso , Chile .
  12. ↑ Took the vacant position of governor as vice-governor to complete the remaining term without vice-governor; subsequently elected for a full term.
  13. ↑ 1 2 Died while in office.
  14. ↑ 1 2 3 4 5 He filled the vacant position as lieutenant governor of the state to complete the remaining term.
  15. ↑ Retired to take office as President of the United States .
  16. ↑ 1 2 In 1905, an amendment to the state constitution was adopted, which shifted the elections one year in advance so that they could be held in even years; thus, Pattinson’s term (which was completed by Lieutenant Governor Harris) was extended to three years [54] .
  17. ↑ 1 2 Brown was forbidden to run for a third term due to the limit on the number of consecutive terms; he successfully ran for the third time after his first term as governor was served by his successor, John Gilligan.
  18. Губ Governor John Kasick’s first full term expires on January 12, 2015.
