History
The first reference dates back to June 12, 1914, when the free library was opened, a reading room in the city of Rostov-on-Don. Since 1920, the library has been named after a famous doctor, writer, defender of childhood, translator, statesman Vera Mikhailovna Velichkina . Since 1920, various sections and circles were created at the library; one of the most significant moments in the life of the library was the meeting of readers with Arkady Gaidar .
During the occupation of the city of Rostov (July 1942 - February 1943) during the Great Patriotic War, the library did not work. But in 1941, the Timur team was organized at the library, whose work was aimed at providing all-round assistance to the front and strengthening the rear. During the occupation of the city of Rostov by the Nazis, they managed to preserve the book fund.
Since 1954, the library has the status of a regional one, which significantly increases the range of its duties; now it becomes a methodological center for regional libraries working with children. And since 1958, there is a close relationship with the library and the Krasnodononsky Museum "Young Guard". In 1959, a move to a new location took place. From 1960-1970, a “savvy tournament” operated and was held at the library. In 1965, the activity of the “Don Pathfinder Unit” was noticeable. The members of which corresponded with children from other cities. From 1970-1980, the library closely cooperates with the regional television and organizes the TV show “Your bookshelf”.
Librarians
In 1915, Tatyana Ksenofontovna Molodtsova came to the library and worked for 35 years as the permanent head of the library. Since 1920, 2 librarians have been working in the library - on a subscription and in the reading room.
Modernity
Today the library is the largest collection of the best art, scientific, educational, reference books, as well as newspapers, magazines, audiovisual and electronic documents for children in the region. Every year, it is visited by 8.5 thousand readers, who are issued 250 thousand copies. documents. The library fund is 112 thousand. The volume of electronic databases created by library staff is more than 103.4 thousand records.
