History
The settlement at the bridge over Oise was first mentioned in the chronicles of the times of King Theodorich III and was called Pont (Pont, bridge). A severe flood of 1658 destroyed the feudal castle, which stood on an island in the middle of the Oise. After that, the island began to shift and, ultimately, clung to the left bank of the river.
The city owes its current name to the legend of Princess Maxans, daughter of the Scottish king. She wanted to devote herself to the ministry of the church, but was promised to a noble pagan named Avicin. Trying to avoid persecution, she, along with the maid, crossed to France and settled by the Oise River. Nevertheless, Evicen managed to track her down and tried to force Maxans to return to him. When Maxans refused, he grabbed her hair and chopped off her head. Further, the legend says that the body of the holy virgin rose from the earth, took up her head and went with her to the burial place, where the St. Maxans church currently stands.
In 1826, the neighboring villages of Les Ages and Plessis-Villet were included in the commune of Pont-Saint-Maxans, but after 7 years, Les Ages regained their independence. In 1951, the villages of Sarron and Villet were annexed to the commune.
A bridge over the Oise in this place has existed since the time of the Merovingians. It was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. The medieval bridge was destroyed in 1914, rebuilt after the war, but again destroyed in 1940. The existing bridge on which the A1 motorway passes was erected in 1949.
