Carnus ( lat. , from other Greek κάρνος "grazing herd") is a genus of diptera insects from the Carnidae family. Parasites of birds. 5 types. Nearctic , Palearctic and Southeast Asia [1] [2] .

Description

Small flies, length about 2 mm, body dark (black-brown). Blood-sucking ectoparasites of chicks of birds. The species Carnus hemapterus is widespread in Europe and the northern and temperate regions of Asia and America. Females lack 1–5 abdominal sternites [1] . Cells cup and bm-cu and vein A 1 + CuA 2 are absent [3] [4] . In young individuals, wings are developed, while in adults they fall away [5] .

Systematics

5 types. The group of genera Meoneura + Carnus together with the genus Enigmocarnus form a sister group to the genus Hemeromyia . Together, they form a common treasure with a group from the genera Neomeoneurites and the extinct Meoneurites [1] .
