Biography
Vasily Levchenko was born in 1912 in Vyborg . After completing ten classes of school, he worked as chairman of the village council in the Malovishersky District of the Novgorod Region . In early 1941, Levchenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since July of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War [1] .
By August 1943, Senior Lieutenant Vasily Levchenko was deputy commander of the battalion of the 332th Infantry Regiment of the 241st Infantry Division of the 27th Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Sumy region of the Ukrainian SSR . On August 9, 1943, Levchenko participated in repelling a number of German counterattacks near the village of Yekaterinovka, Velikopisarevsky District , personally destroying 3 enemy tanks. In that battle, he died. He was buried in Yekaterinovka [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of January 10, 1944, Senior Lieutenant Vasily Levchenko was posthumously awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [1] .
A street was named after Levchenko and a monument was erected in Malaya Vishera [1] .
