Biography

Victor Salazar was born on June 14, 1933 in the rural village of La Paz, province of Cordoba . He began to actively engage in boxing in early childhood, was trained in one of the local boxing clubs. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he won the right to defend the country's honor at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne - he managed to reach the stage of the semi-finals of the second middle weight here, then he was knocked out by the Soviet boxer Gennady Shatkov , who eventually became the Olympic champion.

Having received a bronze Olympic medal, Salasar decided to try himself among professionals and left the team. His professional debut took place in May 1957, and he defeated his first rival Raul Vachin by knockout in the first round. Over the following months, he spent many successful fights, but in the winter of 1957/58 he suffered two defeats at once from Cuban Benny Paret . From that moment on, his career declined sharply, defeats began to alternate with victories. Among other opponents, Salazar met with future world champion from Nigeria Dick Tiger , but lost to him by decision of the majority of judges. Subsequently, he continued to enter the ring until 1963, left the sport after losing by technical knockout to the Italian Nino Benvenuti , never having participated in the title matches. In total, Viktor Salasar spent 45 fights in professional boxing, of which 31 ended with victory (including 23 ahead of schedule), lost 12 times, in two cases a draw was recorded.
