History

The library was officially opened in Port Petrovsk (now Makhachkala ) on May 9, 1900 at the expense of the intelligentsia [1] [2] as the Petrovsky City Public Library. At first she worked on a voluntary basis. The library collection had book collections of local intelligentsia, officials, and officers. The first director of the library was a teacher Georgy Vasilyevich Mustanov. The book fund was 868 copies and 265 items [3] [2] .

In 1921, the library became central, it was named after A.S. Pushkin. In 1930, her collection had about 6,000 books. In 1940, the library was renamed the Republican. In 1940, its funds totaled 73,000 storage units [2] .

In 1947, the library was headed by Ekaterina Gerasimovna Yakushina. The creation of an alphabetical catalog [2] has begun.

In 1997, the library was renamed the National and moved to a new building with an area of ​​9,407 m 2 , designed by A.R. Akhmedov. On the basis of the Republican Library, the Dagestan Republican Youth Library named after A. S. Pushkin , which remained in the historic building of the library, built in 1937 [2] .

In 2004, the National Library was named after Rasul Gamzatov , and in September 2006 the library was completely renamed the National Library of the Republic of Dagestan named after R. Gamzatova [4] [2] .

In 2008, the library received a grant for the project “Creating an electronic database of local history literature and literature in national languages ​​at the National Library named after R. Gamzatov ” [4] [2] .

Since 2013, the library has 24 departments [4] [2] .
