“Remembering 1942” ( Chinese 一九 四 二 , pinyin : Yī Jǐu Sì Èr , pall .: Tszyu Si Er ) is a 2012 dramatic film based on the novel by Liu Zhenyun [1] . The novel describes events in China during the Second World War . The premiere of the film took place on November 29, 2012 at the Rome Film Festival [2] . In 2014, the film was proposed as an applicant for the Academy Award for the best film in a foreign language , but was not elected to the number of nominees [3] .

Story
The film takes place in the Chinese province of Henan , in the winter of 1942 during the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945. The country occupied by Japan plunged into chaos. Due to war, drought and crop failure, mass famine ensued. Millions of people become refugees trying to escape in neighboring provinces. Roads filled with crowds are being bombed by Japanese aircraft. Many of the refugees die of starvation, bombing and general atrocities. Local rulers turn a blind eye to what is happening, carried away by internal strife.
At that time, Time Theodore H. White correspondent was in China. He travels to Henan to describe the famine. He discovers that while people die every day, and some even resort to cannibalism, the government of the Republic of China does nothing to help refugees. Chiang Kai-shek even wants to surrender the province to the Japanese by abandoning refugees.
After the publication of White's article in the United States, the government of Chiang Kai-shek is forced to acknowledge the disaster and asks for help. But when humanitarian aid begins to flow into the province, local officials and soldiers begin the struggle over who should receive the largest share.
