Bethany Hamilton ( born Bethany Hamilton ; February 8, 1990 , Lihue , Hawaii , USA) is a professional American surfer . In addition to her sports career, she gained fame as a victim of a shark attack, in which a shark bit her left arm. After the attack, Bethany not only survived, but also returned to professional surfing. In 2004, her autobiography, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and the Fight for Returning to the Board , was released. In 2011, the movie Surfer of the Soul based on the story of Bethany was released. In 2014, Bethany Hamilton appeared as a cameo in the film " Dolphin Tale 2 ".

Biography
On the morning of October 31, 2003, at the age of 13, Bethany was skating on a board off the coast of Kauai with her friends. Around 7:30 in the morning, she was lying on the board, her left hand in the water, when she was attacked by a tiger shark [1] . A shark bit her hand below her shoulder. With the help of friends, she got to the coast, where Holt Blanchard, the father of her friend Alana Blanchard , put a tourniquet on her, adjusting the strap from the surfboard for this. By the time she was taken to the hospital, she had lost about 60% of her blood, but managed to survive.
Despite the injury, Bethany decided to return to surfing. Less than a month after discharge, she was already standing on the board [2] .
After returning, Bethany was able to become the winner of several major competitions, the biggest victory was the second place at the World Junior Championships in 2009. In 2004, she was awarded the prestigious ESPY Award .
Now a board with a trace of a shark bite is in the California Museum of Surfing [3] .
Personal life
Since August 18, 2013, Bethany has been married to Adam Dirks, whom she met a year before their wedding. The spouses have two sons - Tobias Dirks (born June 1, 2015) [4] and Wesley Phillip Dirks (born in March 2018) [5] .
