Story

15-year-old Daisy ( Sirsha Ronan ), a bitchy but strong-willed American teenage girl, comes to England for the summer to her aunt Penn and her cousins Edmond ( George Mackay ), Isaac ( Tom Holland ) and Piper ( Harley Bird ). At first, Daisy is reluctant to contact them, but over time, she falls in love with her older cousin Edmond.

A few days after her arrival, her aunt flies to Geneva to participate in the conference regarding the aggravated political situation in the world and the threat of World War III. In her absence, an unknown enemy detonates a nuclear bomb in London, killing thousands of people and causing radioactive fallout. Soon after, a member of the US Consulate in Edinburgh arrives at Aunt Penn’s home and informs Daisy that the United States is recalling its citizens from the United Kingdom and giving her a return ticket. He advises her cousins to stay home and wait for the evacuation.

After a night with Edmond, Daisy decides to stay with him, no matter what happens, and burns his ticket. Since this is their home, they decide to abandon the evacuation, and hide not far in the barn, where they live for some time. But one morning the British army bursts into them, which forces them to evacuate. Edmond, before taking Daisy away, told her to come back anyway. Edmond and Isaac are drafted into the army, and Daisy and Piper are taken away for community service. Girls live in a family in a safe guarded area. Every day they go on a van with other people to community service.

Days go by, and Daisy still cannot get the thought of returning out of his head. Piper longs to see her brothers and mother, as well as return to her home. One working day, Daisy and Piper meet Joe, their friend, with whom they spent the last carefree days. He tells them that his whole family was killed. Upon returning to the safe zone, the guys see that the entry was seized by terrorists, however, when all the vans leave, the last one, in which were Piper, Joe and Daisy, gets stuck. Joe, obeying a fit of rage, shouts to the terrorists that they will certainly take revenge on them and they have no chance of survival. Passengers try to reassure the boy, but all to no avail. A bullet punches the boy’s head, and the wagon manages to leave before the terrorists begin to fire at him.

For Daisy, Joe’s death and tension is the last straw. In the evening, she collects everything she needs in a backpack and, together with Piper, leaves the safe area on her way home. On the way back, Daisy faces various difficulties, they run out of purified water. Having gotten to the place where Edmond and Isaac supposedly should be, Daisy finds nothing but the decomposed corpses of boys from 12 to 18, among which Isaac's body is found.

Trying to quickly escape from what she saw, Daisy goes strictly on the map, to the place where the guys used to live. But along the path in the forest, girls meet brutal, hungry people who want to put at least something in their mouth, be it animal meat, or weak, fragile girls. Unknown pursuers try to kill Piper to feed themselves, but Daisy manages to shoot the men.

The heroines continue their journey home. Unfortunately, running away from the pursuers, Daisy loses the compass and map, realizing that now you have to go wherever your eyes look. Finally weakened, the girls stop near a small pond, in the wilderness. Daisy again recalls Edmond, Isaac, what Eddie told her before they parted. She looks at the sky, noticing in the open spaces of heaven the bird that Eddie nursed. Following the bird, the girls find their way home. They are full of confidence that they will find someone in the house, but there is nothing but Joe’s dog, moldy food and traces of explosions. Girls stay in the house.

In the evening, at dinner, they hear the dog begin to bark heart-rendingly, as if calling for help. Hearing a special echo, Daisy realizes that Eddie is in the forest and the dog is calling for help. Having finally stopped listening to voices in her head, she hurries into the forest and finds Edmond there, wounded, with enormous swelling, numb and dehydrated. For some time, the girl still manages to leave the guy, but he does not cease to be silent. He probably witnessed the death of his brother, as well as other guys. Eddie has a deep spiritual wound that does not allow him to once again enjoy the presence of Daisy, as well as the realization that he survived.

In the finale, Daisy gives a monologue, in which she says that after the war, everything in her life changed, everything became different. She kisses Eddie, reassuring him, saying that she believes that someday he will get better. “So I live now,” she says, on this they clasp their hands, afraid once again to lose each other.
