Judith Gauthier ( French Judith Gautier , August 25, 1845 , Paris - December 26, 1917 ) - French poetess and novelist . The daughter of Theophilus Gauthier and Ernesta Grisi, sister of the Italian ballerina Carlotta Grisi . She became the first female member of the Goncourt Academy in 1910 [2] . In the same year she was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor [3] .

She was married to Katul Mendes , but soon divorced. For some time she was in connection with Victor Hugo [4] . There was also a short romance with composer Richard Wagner in the late summer of 1876 .
Then, she married Pierre Loti , a famous novelist. Since 1913 she played in the New Theater in New York . She knew a lot about oriental culture , and her main works were on the subject of China or Japan .
