El Santuario ( Spanish: El Santuario ) - a city and municipality in the north of Colombia , in the department of Antioquia . It is part of the East Antioquia subregion .

History
The settlement from which the city later grew was founded on March 11, 1765 by captain Antonio Gomez de Castro. The municipality of El Santuario was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1838 .
Geographical position
The city is located in the southeastern part of the department, in the highlands of Central Cordillera , about 32 kilometers east-southeast (ESE) from Medellin , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 2133 meters above sea level [1] .
The municipality of El Santuario borders in the north with the municipality of Marinilla , in the northeast - with the municipality of El Peñol , in the east - with the municipality of Granada , in the south - with the municipality of Kokorna , in the west - with the municipality of El Carmen de Viboral . The area of the municipality is 75 km² [2] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2012 was 26,910 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 46.7% of the population of El Santuario, women - respectively 53.3%. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 99.9% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 88.9%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of El Santario is agricultural production and the textile industry . In the municipality, carrots, potatoes, beets, cabbage, peas, corn and other crops are grown.
57.7% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 21.9% are service enterprises, 15.3% are industrial enterprises, 5.1% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
