Etymology

There are 2 legends about the origin of the name Margalla. According to the first of these, these hills have always been known for their abundance of snakes, respectively, Mar is translated as 'snake' from the Persian language and Pashto , and galla means 'flock', therefore Margalla can mean a place where there are many snakes.

According to the second version, the word 'Margalla' came from Mar Gall , which was translated as 'strangle' ( Mar - 'blow' and Gall - 'neck'). It is believed that many bandits and robbers inhabited the hills, who used these hills as a refuge and killed travelers for the purpose of robbery.

In addition, there is speculation that the name came from Mārĩkalā , the Persian equivalent of the word Takshaśilã ( Taxila ). [one]
