History
The first versions of the engine in 2001 for personal use were developed by the French programmer Pierreque Le Gaulle. Inspired by the open phpBB web forum installed on his university’s website, he chose the GPL to distribute his system and began to build a community around his project. In the spring of 2002, the first version of the system called PhpWebGallery was released.
In 2002, the system became multilingual. For team development , a bug tracker was installed in 2004 . PhpWebGallery was renamed Piwigo on February 15, 2009 . As of 2013, there are 10 people in the Piwigo development team, and another 100 are translators. The project website is available in 12 languages.
