Sports career
A graduate of Stanford University .
At the age of 15, the athlete won three gold medals at the Tokyo Summer Olympics (1964): the 100 m butterfly (1.04.7), the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and the 4 × 100 m combined relay in which the US team set world records - 4.03.8 and 4.33.9, respectively. She also became a silver medalist at a distance of 100 m freestyle. At this distance, she became the second swimmer in history to overcome her faster than in one minute.
She became the champion of the Pan American Games (1963) in the combined relay and the three-time champion of the USA (1964) at the 100 m freestyle, as well as the 100 and 200 m butterfly, setting world records: in swimming, butterfly at distances: 100 m - 1.05.4, 1.04 7 (1964); 200 m - 2.28.1 and 2.26.4 (1964).
In 1972, she was inducted into the International Water Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1997, into the Stanford University Hall of Fame. In 1984, she was honored to light an Olympic torch at Stanford, where football competitions were held.
