The 764th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Air Defense Force (794th Air Defense IAP) was a military unit of the aviation of the Air Defense Forces of the USSR Armed Forces, which performed air defense tasks and became part of the Armed Forces of the USSR and Russia.

The 764th Fighter Aviation Regiment was formed on November 7, 1952 (military unit 40373, later military unit 31533).
Excerpt from the form of the 764th iap:
"According to the Directive of the USSR War Minister No. ORG / 3/79348 of February 15, 1952, and the Main Directorate of the Commander of the Air Defense Forces No. OMU / 2/1573527 of March 25, 1952, the formation of the 87th Air Defense Fighter Division, which included 763- 7th, 764th, 765th Fighter Aviation Regiments and 908th Separate Aviation Technical Battalion. The formation of the division and regiments ended November 7, 1952. This date was the official day of the formation of the regiment. "
On June 1, 2009, the 764th IAP and support units were transformed into the 6977th aviation base of the II category (6977th Avb, military unit 40383). [one]
On November 23, 2010, the 6977th Avb was reorganized into the Aviation Group of the Red Banner Orsha Order of Suvorov, 3rd Class, the Guards 6980th Aviation Base, 1st Class Shagol ( Chelyabinsk ), based at the Bolshoi Savino airfield (Avg 6980th Avb, military unit 69806-2; "2" - the second air group 6980th Avb).
Heroes of the Soviet Union served in the regiment — Williamson, Alexander Alexandrovich , Ivanov, Nikolai Vasilyevich , Grishchenko, Pyotr Lukyanovich , Zhukov, Ivan Efimovich .
Commanders
At the initial stage, the formation of the 764th Iap was headed by Major Shor, Veniamin Evgenievich . On May 13, 1952, the first commander of the regiment was Lt. Col. Tolstonogov Innokenty Moiseyevich.
Since December 1953, the regiment was headed by Hero of the Soviet Union , Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Williamson .
Since March 1965, Colonel Shepherds, Gertrude Pavlovich became the commander of the 764th IAP. [2]

In this regiment served as a pilot Safronov, Sergei Ivanovich , who died while trying to shoot down a spy plane F. Powers [3] .
