The Krasnodar State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve named after E. D. Felitsyn was founded in 1879. Since 1991, the museum-reserve has been named after its founder Evgeny Dmitrievich Felitsyn . By decree of the President of the Russian Federation, he is assigned to objects of federal significance. A total of 428.4 thousand exhibits are stored in the funds of the Krasnodar State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve.

In 1879, the Secretary of the Kuban Regional Statistics Committee, E. D. Felitsyn, founded the Military Ethnographic and Natural History Museum. The museum received official status on July 12, 1908. By 1917, the museum fund of the Military Ethnographic and Natural History Museum amounted to more than 11,000 items.
At the end of 1918 the idea of ββcreating the Central Regional Museum. The basis of the new Kuban-Black Sea Regional Museum was the former Military Museum with a collection of more than 13,000 items. Since 1924, the Krasnodar Museum received the status of Scientific.
Since the mid 30s, the museum has been called the Krasnodar Museum of Local Lore. The fund of the museum amounted to 40,000 items. The collections were replenished due to archaeological and paleontological expeditions.
During the Great Patriotic War, the main activity was to study the natural wealth of the Kuban, to identify raw materials. Very little is known about the activities of the museum during the German occupation .
After the liberation of the city, the museum continued to work. Since July 1961, the museum has been located in the former mansion of Bogarsukov on Gimnazicheskaya street 67. In the second half of the 70s, interest in ethnography revived.
In 1977, the Krasnodar State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve was created on the basis of the Krasnodar Territory, Anapa and Temryuk Local History Museums, as well as several other museums of the region. New exhibitions open, collections are replenished, and a lot of scientific and educational work is underway.
