Biography

Elisha Netanyahu (Mileikovsky) was born on December 21, 1912 in Warsaw (then the Russian Empire , now Poland ) with the spouses of Sarah (nee Lurie) and rabbi Nathan Mileykovsky , a native of the town of Krevo, Oshmyany county . Father was a famous speaker and public figure in Zionism . In 1920, his family repatriated to Eretz Yisrael . He studied at the school " Real " in Haifa , graduating in 1930. In 1935 he returned to this school as a teacher of mathematics.

He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he defended himself as a bachelor, master (1935) and doctor (1942) under the leadership of Benjamin Amira and Michael Fekete. He joined the British Army as a volunteer, served in Egypt and Italy as an officer in the engineer unit, specializing in mapping there, and later also participated in the Arab-Israeli war in this position.

Since 1946 - lecturer at the Technion. In 1958, promoted to the title of professor. In Technion, he performed administrative duties, in particular as the head of the department of mathematics, dean of the faculty of sciences and dean of the faculty of mathematics. In addition, he helped in the establishment of the University. Ben Gurion in the Negev .

In 1953 he took a long vacation, during which he made visits to Stanford University (1953-1954), the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (in 1961), the University of New Mexico (1969), and the University of Maryland at College Park (1973), Swiss Higher Technical School of Zurich (1979).

Since 1980, Netanyahu left the Technion and moved to Jerusalem, where he lived until the end of his life. Died of cancer on April 3, 1986. Throughout his career, he collaborated with Pal Erdös , Charles Löwner and other prominent mathematicians.

Lectures in memory of Elisha Netanyahu

Since 1987, the Netanyahu family, together with renowned mathematics scientists at the Technion, annually organize memorable lectures in memory of Elisha Netanyahu, the first of which was delivered by Pal Erdös . In the following years, speakers were Lars Alfors, Robert Aumann , Lipman Bears , Enrico Bombieri, Charles Fefferman, Samuel Karlin , David Kazhdan , Louis Nirenberg , Terence Tao , Wendelin Werner and Don Zagir .

Family

Elisha Netanyahu is the brother of Bentsion Netanyahu , the father of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu .

In 1949, he married Shoshan Netanyahu, his former student in Real Madrid, who later became the second female judge of the Israeli Supreme Court . They had two children in a marriage - sons Nathan Netanyahu (b. 1952), professor of computer science at Bar-Ilan University , and Dan Netanyahu (b. 1954), information systems specialist, general director of IACS.
