Geographical position
The castle lies on a natural hill, the so-called Drumlin of the Wurm glaciation era, at an altitude of 772 m above sea level.
History
The first information about Waldburg Castle dates back to 1100, when the Welfers granted their ministers territorial possessions ( feuds ) east of Ravensburg , in those days, apparently, covered with dense forests, where the name of the castle comes from: "forest castle", "castle in the forest ". The castle subsequently also gave the name to the entire noble family of Waldburg, first mentioned in 1108. In 1210, the male line of Waldburg was cut short, and the castle passed into the possession of the von Tanne family related to Waldburg.
In the first half of the XIII century. the castle was significantly rebuilt, and the main building was erected in the main volume, the so-called palace.
The high point of the castle of Waldburg marks the reign of Emperor Frederick II , when imperial regalia was preserved in it from 1220 until at least 1240 under Eberhard von Tanne-Waldburg.
In 1327, at the foot of the castle hill, a church was erected in honor of St. Magnus .
In 1524-1525 the castle almost untouched survived the Peasant War .
In the middle of the XVI century. under George IV von Waldburg, the castle was rebuilt and expanded again in accordance with the new fashion, and acquired, in general, its modern appearance. However, already in the XVII century. Waldburg was inhabited only from time to time.
The last restructuring was the installation of the castle chapel in the Baroque style in 1728.
Modern usage
The castle of Walburg houses a museum open in the summer months. Visitors have the opportunity not only to inspect a fully preserved medieval castle, weapons and household items of the past, but also copies of imperial regalia: crown , scepter, orb and Vienna Spear . In addition, the exposition presents a facsimile of 1901 from the famous map of Martin Waldzeemueller , the first map to record the geographical name “ America ”.
