Biography

Born in a merchant family; his grandfather Konstantin Danilovich Zhadin (1812-1880) - the Murom merchant of the 1st guild; Father Ivan Konstantinovich (1835-1903) - a merchant of the 1st guild, a hereditary honorary citizen .

He received his primary education at the Murom Real School . In 1914 he entered the Moscow City People's University named after A. L. Shanyavsky , and in 1915 he began to study at the medical faculty of Kazan University . Since 1916 he was in military service; since 1918 he commanded a platoon of the Red Army . In March 1918 he returned to Murom and took an active part in the creation of the Oka Biological Station and the Murom Museum of Local Lore [1] (in the Zvorykins' house) - he headed the museum, and since 1921 the station, organizing the publication of her works.

From 1921 to 1924 he studied at the natural department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University . After graduation, he was engaged in hydrobiological research. He studied the bottom fauna of the Oka River and freshwater mollusks. In the years 1925-1927. explored Lake Baikal in the Baikal expedition under the leadership of G. Yu. Vereshchagin .

In 1928, the Oka Biological Station was relocated to Nizhny Novgorod , where later, on the basis of it, V.I. Zhadin organized the Gorky Hydrobiological Institute , of which he became deputy director.

In 1934 he moved to Leningrad; became an employee of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and since 1936 headed its hydrobiological department. During the Great Patriotic War, from the autumn of 1942 to 1945, Zhadin led hydrobiological studies in Tajikistan.

In 1956, he was elected vice president of the International Association of Limnologists, and was awarded the Naumann-Tinemann medal. In 1960-1966 was the head of the Laboratory of Freshwater and Experimental Hydrobiology of the Zoological Institute.

V. I. Zhadin is the author of 150 scientific works, including the fundamental monographs “Mollusks of fresh and brackish waters of the USSR”, “Fauna of the USSR. Mollusks of the Unionidae family. ” Thanks to the work of Zhadin, a complete inventory of the mollusk fauna of the USSR was carried out, and their systematics was brought to European standards of that time.
