The last flag of Cyprus under the British protectorate, adopted in 1922
On June 4, 1878, a British protectorate was established over Cyprus, the former territory of the Ottoman Empire , in accordance with the Cyprus Convention . On November 5, 1914, the United Kingdom declared war on the Ottoman Empire and annexed Cyprus. In accordance with the Lausanne Peace Treaty, Turkey recognized the British possession of Cyprus, and on March 10, 1925, the island became a crown colony . After the Zurich and London agreements, Cyprus gained independence.
