Biography

He was born on September 3 (15), 1828 in Moscow, early lost his parents — Nikolai Sergeevich and Maria Alekseevna — and lived with his maternal grandmother, Countess Anna Bobrinskaya .

One year he studied at St. Petersburg University . In December 1847 he entered the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in February 1852 he was assigned to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, from where he was dismissed for staff in 1855. In the same year, he was appointed to the squad number 109 of the State militia with renaming to second lieutenant; On October 1, 1856, he was transferred to the Life Guard rifle of the Imperial surname battalion and appointed battalion adjutant. November 28 of the same year was awarded the Order of St.. Stanislav 3rd degree; April 7, 1857 promoted to lieutenant. November 30, 1857 dismissed from military service.

In 1858, the nobility of Serpukhov district was elected a member of the Moscow Provincial Committee on improving the life of landlord peasants; March 24, 1859 - Honorary Trustee of the Moscow gymnasiums and in the same year he was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of public charity institutions and the Trustee of the Moscow orphanage (trusteeship continued until 1862). He was conferred to the chamber junkers on August 30, 1860.

From December 20, 1860, he was a member of the Moscow provincial presence in peasant affairs; since 1862 - Moscow provincial leader of the nobility. At this time, introduced a new urban situation, zemstvo, new courts, and he with extraordinary tact led public meetings. He had a great fortune, but his house on Novinsky Boulevard (No. 20) was distinguished by comfort without too much luxury; he participated a lot in charity affairs,

From August 30, 1862 L. N. Gagarin - with the rank of chamberlain; from August 26, 1864 - State Councilor. He was granted the Order of St. Stanislav 1st degree and the court title "in the position of chamberlain".

In 1861, Prince Gagarin married the famous Petersburg ballerina Anna Ivanovna Prikhunova . The couple had their only son, Vladimir (born November 4, 1861. [1] [ clarify ] ).

In the summer of 1868, L. N. Gagarin, with his wife and son, went abroad to Bad Ischl ; here on July 22, he and his son and his caretaker walked on the dry bottom of the pond, but unexpectedly the floodgates were open; the tutor managed to escape, and the Gagarins sank. Both were buried in St. Petersburg at the cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery .
