Biography
Born in the town of Pastavy in the family of Shahno Schreberka and Rebekah Rum [1] . Got a traditional Jewish religious education. In his youth he took part in the Zionist movement. In 1900 he opened a publishing house in Vilna (before 1908 he published over 100 books in Hebrew and Yiddish, including works by S. Niger , Mendele Moyher-Sforim and others). In 1911 - together with E. Kaplan , Ben-Avigdor , Benjamin Shimin and Jacob Lidsky - one of the founders of the joint-stock publishing company Central. In 1914, he began to publish a daily newspaper in Yiddish, “Das Lebn” ( Warsaw ). He moved to Warsaw in 1922 and headed the Central, which was later reorganized into the publishing house Akhiasaf. Thanks to him, “History of the Jewish People” was published in ten volumes by S. M. Dubnov , Collected Works in fifteen volumes by S. Ansky , Collected Works in nine volumes by J. Dineson , Collected Works in seven volumes by Der Lebediker , etc.
In 1935 he emigrated to Eretz Yisrael , where he continued his publishing activities (in total, he published over 300 books in Yiddish). One of the founders is the first president of the Eretz Israel Publishers Union.
