Mircea Dobrescu ( Romanian Mircea Dobrescu ; September 5, 1930 , Kotorka - August 6, 2015 ) - the Romanian boxer of the lightest weight category, played for the Romanian national team in the 1950s - early 1960s. Silver medalist of the Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, winner of two silver medals at the European Championship, participant in many international tournaments and match meetings.

Biography

Born in the municipality of Kotorka , Buzau County . Actively started boxing in early childhood in one of the local boxing clubs, then joined the Steaua club in Bucharest, where he trained until the very end of his career. Thanks to a series of successful performances, he was granted the right to defend the country's honor at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki - reached the quarter-finals stage here, after which he lost to American Nathan Brooks with a score of 1: 4, who eventually became the Olympic champion in the easiest weight.

In 1953, Dobrescu boxed at the European Championships in Warsaw, but failed to overcome the preliminary stage, losing to German Edgar Basel . Two years later, he was at the European Championships in West Berlin - he confidently defeated Olympic champion Wolfgang Berendt in the semifinals, but in the decisive match he again met Basel and lost to him again. Remaining the leader of the national team in the lightest weight class, he qualified for the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he overcame all his rivals except Englishman Terence Spinks .

After receiving the silver Olympic medal, Dobrescu continued to enter the ring as part of the national team, taking part in all major international tournaments. So, in 1957, he won first place at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow , moreover, visited the European Championship in Prague, from where he brought a silver medal (in the final match, lost to German Manfred Homberg ). Two years later, he went to the European Championship in Lucerne, at the stage of the quarter-finals he could not get through the Soviet boxer Vladimir Stolnikov . In 1960, he won the championship of the Balkan countries and represented the country at the Olympic Games in Rome - in the quarterfinal of the Olympic tournament with a score of 1: 4, he lost to Japanese Kiyoshi Tanabe .

Last participated in major competitions in 1961, at the European Championships in Belgrade reached the quarterfinals and was again knocked out by the representative of the USSR Stolnikov. After this failure, Mircea Dobrescu decided to end his career as an athlete, giving way to the team of young Romanian boxers.
