Biography
He grew up on a farm near the town of Ponca City.
He began to engage in wrestling at school, but neither there nor at the college of the University of Oklahoma had any particular success, he became twice the second in the championship according toNCAA . But, unlike many others, he continued to train hard. Before the Olympics, Shelby Wilson even temporarily left school to devote more time to training. [2] . However, at that time he specialized in Greco-Roman wrestling, and only in 1959 began to engage in freestyle wrestling.
At the qualifying competitions, he was nominated for a national qualifying tournament just in case twice - from Oklahoma and from Colorado . He remained second at the national qualifying competitions, but went to the training camp (the three winners went to the training camp and it was there that it was decided who would represent the country). At the training camp, he again tried to qualify twice - both in the free and Greco-Roman wrestling. In the Greco-Roman wrestling, he won the competition, and was already selected to the team, but decided to fight also in the freestyle, and there again he was out of competition.
At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, he fought freestyle wrestling in the category of up to 67 kilograms (lightweight). The elimination of the tournament took place as penalties accumulated. No penalty points were awarded for a clean victory, 1 penalty point was awarded for a victory in points for any ratio of votes, any loss in points was punishable by 3 penalty points, a pure defeat - 4 penalty points. A draw could be fixed in the bout, then each of the fighters was awarded 2 penalty points. If a wrestler scored 6 or more penalty points, he was eliminated from the tournament. The title was disputed by 24 people. An obvious favorite of the tournament was the two-time world champion, Soviet wrestler Vladimir Sinyavsky , whom Shelby Wilson was able to defeat in the fourth round, at the beginning of the meeting going to his feet and earning one point, and become the champion of the Olympic Games.
