Biography
Representative of the Gagarin princely family. The eldest of the two sons of Prince Peter Afanasyevich Gagarin (? - 1670 ) and the grandson of Prince Athanasius Fedorovich Gagarin .
In 1668 - 1676 he was a solicitor, from 1676 - a steward ; This year he accompanied Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich on his campaign in the village of Pokrovskoye . Since 1679 he was in the voivodship in Siberia: in 1679 - 1683 - in the Ilimsk prison, in 1691 - 1694 - in Irkutsk , and then in Yakutsk . He was entrusted with the oversight of the rebel archers, who were exiled to the subordinate cities, and was given the power, "without informing the king, to execute by death all those who would cause unrest or be convicted of harboring rebels and thieves."
In 1691 - 1692, his younger brother, Prince Matvey Petrovich Gagarin , who was transferred to the province of Nerchinsk in 1692, was a companion.
I.P. Gagarin is often mentioned in documents related to the relations of the Siberian order with the Buryats, Daurians and other native tribes. As can be seen from the letter of Peter the Great in 1697 to the voivod voivode D.P. Protasiev , many Siberian voivods, including Prince I.P. Gagarin, not only did not care about the treasury profit, but along with the collectors, forgetting the cross kissing, took care of to themselves, they harassed and robbed merchant people and linguistic foreigners, and ruined the service people without giving them the required salary, and punished them innocently.
