History
In December 1995, two film critics Joey Berlin and Rod Lurie decided to organize a new Hollywood award ceremony [2] . As Berlin subsequently explained, they were encouraged by this idea because they realized that the radio and television journalists play a huge role in the world of cinema, as they attend weekly press conferences and bring news to a huge number of viewers and listeners, often not even members of the National Society of Film Critics , the National Council of Film Critics of the United States, or the HFPA [3] . According to him, initially they counted on television and viewed their show as a competitor to the Golden Globe ceremony. And Lurie recalled the obsession with cinema by the French director Francois Truffaut , expressing “the joy or mental pain of filmmaking”, and expressed hope for a similar approach to the vote [2] .
It took about three weeks to organize the first ceremony. Berlin and Lurie simply turned to their colleagues, with whom they often communicated. Colleagues supported this initiative and soon 44 participants gathered. The next step was to contact the studios and press agents, whose support helped organize 17 categories of nominations in the first year. Fourteen winners came in person to collect their awards [3] . The first ceremony was held in January 1996 at the Sofitel Hotel, at which Paul Sorvino presented his daughter Mira with the award for the film "The Great Aphrodite ", followed by a series of awards and nominations for various film awards [2] .
Broadcast
In 2012, it became known that The CW television network acquired the rights to broadcast the 18th award ceremony [4] .
