History

The ritual mourning of the Senlyau bride symbolizes temporary death, the bride’s transition to another family. Senlyau is associated with goes back to the Bashkir pre-Muslim views associated with the crying magic.

Prayers, her requests to the deities: “Etegn tigәn eet yondoҙ, / Өlkәrҙәren tashlap kitә almay. / Ҡyҙ balaҡai niңәil tiһәң, / Yort-ilkәyen tashlap kitә almai. ”(“ Ursa Major is seven stars, / She cannot leave her Pleiad. / Young virgin, therefore, cries, / She cannot leave her native land. ”).

Senlyau curses are addressed to his and future relatives, come from the magic of foul language, which scares away evil forces. The groom was often portrayed in them as caricature: "Keiәү ҙә keiәү tinegeҙ, / Keiәүgenәgeҙ shulma, no? / Ayagy salky Qabyndai, / Auygy ҙagan ҡabyndai.
