Youth

Dion Fanoeuf was born on April 10, 1985, in Edmonton . The father of the future hockey player, Paul, builder, mother, Amber - a nurse [3] , both natives of Prince Edward Island [4] , moved to Edmonton 28 years ago [3] . Dion’s younger brother, Dane, also a hockey player, has a contract with AJHL Sherwood Park Crusaders [5] .

Dion became interested in hockey at an early age, he loved to play and watch matches on TV [3] and as a child was a fan of “ Edmonton Oilers ” [6] . The idol of the future hockey player was Wayne Gretzky , later his favorite player was defender Scott Stevens , whose playing style was popular with Dion [6] . The Fanёf family was friendly, and parents supported the son's hobby for hockey. Every winter, the father of the future hockey player poured a skating rink in the courtyard of the house and helped his son train, from a young age accustoming his son to play in an aggressive, forceful manner: “Dion always tried to push me into the snowdrifts. And if at the age of 13-14 I still coped with it, then at 15-16 I already had to fall in the snow ” [3] . Fanyöf Sr. also drew attention to the blow - the shot of Dion was so powerful that sometimes he punched a goal net with a puck [7] . The future hockey player studied ice skating with his mother, who was previously engaged in figure skating and achieved some success - she represented Prince Edward Island at the 1975 Canadian Games [3] .

Junior career

The Red Deer Rebels selected Fanef in the 3rd round of the 2000 WHL draft [8] . The following year, in the 2001/02 season, he made his debut as part of the club and for the first season scored 17 points in 67 games [9] . The Rebels reached the playoffs, where Dion played 21 matches and gave 2 assists [9] , and his team reached the final, where they lost to Kutenai Ice [10] . The next season, Dion significantly improved performance - 30 points (16 goals and 14 assists) [9] . “Red Deer” reached the final for the second year in a row, but lost again, this time to “ Kelovna Rockets ” [10] . The young hockey player was compared with the famous defender Scott Stevens , and scouts noted his physical qualities and ability to play both in defense and in attack [11] . Fanef’s game impressed Calgary Flames general manager Darryl Sutter , who selected him in the first round of the 2003 draft [12] .

After the draft, Dion secured the title of one of the best players in WHL. In the 2003/04 season, he scored 43 points in 62 games [9] and received the “Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy” - a prize for the best defender of WHL [13] . The hockey player was also included in the WHL Western All-Star Team and the CHL All-Star Team [9] [14] . Already in 2004, Fanёf could join Calgary, but the debut in the NHL postponed a lockout for a year [15] . In the last season at Red Deer, he scored 56 points in 55 matches [9] , again received “Bill Hunter Trophy” and got into the teams of all stars WHL and CHL [9] . In total, during his junior career, Dion scored 146 points in 255 matches. Prospects Hockey magazine recognized him as the best CHL player in 2004 and 2005, ranking Sydney Crosby above, and also named him one of the most promising defenders of the decade [16] .

NHL Career

Calgary Flames

Fanof as part of Calgary Flames (2008)

Fanof joined Flames in the 2005/06 season , signing his first professional contract in September 2005. On October 5, he made his league debut, playing against Minnesota . Five weeks later, in a match with Colorado Avalanche , he scored the first goal and gave the first assist. According to the results of November, Fanёf was recognized as the “rookie of the month”, being the leader in terms of effectiveness among the defenders spending the first season in the NHL [17] . In January, along with Alexander Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby , Dion was named a contender for the Calder Trophy - the prize for the best rookie of the league [18] . Fanöf finished the season with 49 points [9] . He became the third newcomer in NHL history to score 20 goals (after Brian Leach and Barry Beck ) [19] . Fanёf failed to win the Calder Trophy - the award went to Ovechkin [18] .

The following season, Fanoeff scored 50 points (17 goals and 33 assists) [9] and was first invited to the All-Star Game [20] . Before the match, he took part in the Super Skills competition for the strongest throw, but lost to Zdeno Hare [21] . The match itself was a success for the Canadian, he scored a goal and gave the assist, and his Western Conference team won with a score of 12: 9 [22] . In the middle of the 2007/08 season, Faneuf signed with Calgary a 6-year contract worth $ 39 million [23] . The season turned out to be successful for the hockey player - he set a personal record for the number of points scored (60) [9] , was selected in the top five of the All-Star Game [24] , entered the All-Star Team at the end of the season [25] and was nominated for James Norris Trophy Memorial ” [26] , but lost to the Swede Niklas Lidström [27] .

Fanoff season 2008/09 did not become successful. Abandoned goals (11) and scored points (47) were the worst for all the time he played in the NHL [9] . The plus / minus indicator was also very low, −11 [28] , however, despite this, he spent a lot of time on ice - an average of 26 minutes 31 seconds per game (4th indicator in the league) [28] . Due to the poor play of the hockey player, there were rumors that he could leave Calgary [29] . The club’s management, however, defended the player, saying that Fanёf showed poor results due to permanent injuries - during the season he had hip damage [30] , and at the end Dion received a rib fracture.

Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators

Fanef in the shape of Maple Leafs in 2012

In the middle of the 2009/10 season, Faneuf still left Calgary. On January 31, 2010, he, along with Fredrik Shestrom and Keith Oli, was traded at the Toronto Maple Leafs [31] . Matt Stagean , Ian White , Niklas Hagman and Jamal Myers went to the Flames. [31] According to the player, he was shocked, but not disappointed with the exchange [32] . On February 2, Dion made his debut for a new club in a match with the New Jersey Devils . [33] Soon after the exchange, Fanöf was appointed alternate captain of Toronto [34] , replacing Michael Komisarek , who had been eliminated before the end of the season due to injury [35] .

For the rest of the season, Fanёf, like his club, looked weak - the defender needed 25 matches to score his first goal, and the NHL hockey players in the poll recognized him as the most overrated league player [36] . The Toronto coach Ron Wilson, however, noted the positive aspects of the arrival of Dion, in particular, he became the team leader morally and improved the players ’mood [37] [38] . On June 14, 2010 Fanyöf was named the new Toronto captain after Mats Sundin [39] .

The 2010/11 season began for the hockey player unsuccessfully. On November 2, he was injured (a lacerated leg wound inflicted by Peter Regin's skate) [40] , underwent surgery and missed a month. In total for the regular season Fanoeuf spent 66 matches, earning 30 points in them at a utility rate of -2. “Toronto” again failed to reach the playoffs, which allowed Dion and his teammates, Phil Kessel and Luke Shenn , to get a call to the Canadian national team for the World Cup [41] .

Fanёf played in all 82 matches of the regular season 2011/12 , gaining 44 points in them. With 92 minutes of penalty, he became the most frequently removed player in the team, and in the ranking of the toughest players in the history of the NHL, published in August 2011 by the official website of the league, Dion took second place [2] . Despite the next unsuccessful Maple Leafs season (the team was left without a playoff for the 7th season in a row), Fanef managed to get an invitation to an all-star match for the first time since 2008, ahead of Sergei Gonchar from Ottawa Senators in the audience vote [42] . At the match, the defender was left without productive actions.

The 2012/13 season , shortened due to a lockout, started for the hockey player unsuccessfully - he scored only 1 point in the first 11 matches [43] . There were rumors of an upcoming exchange of Dion [44] , it was reported that Edmonton was interested in him [45] , but the defender successfully spent the rest of the season and helped Toronto finally reach the playoffs [43] , where the “maple leaves” lost in stubborn struggle (4–3) to Boston .

The next season , which was developing successfully for the team, ended in failure due to a series at the end of the regular season: of the last 16 matches, “Toronto” lost 14 and failed to get into the playoffs. Fanёf showed close to last year's performance indicators (31 points in the 2013/14 season, 28 points in the 2012/13 season), having played 32 more matches, and the number of penalty minutes received by the defender was the highest since the 2007/08 season. On December 10, Fanёf even received a two-match suspension and a fine for foul play against Kevan Miller [46] . CBC hockey expert Glenn Healy criticized Fanoeuf and Kessel’s game, saying that he “dislikes Fanoeuf as the captain of Toronto and Kessel as the main leader” [47] . Despite the signing of a new $ 7 million contract with the club over the course of the season, $ 49 million [48] , reports again appeared of Toronto’s readiness to exchange Dion [49] .

In the offseason and during the regular season 2014/15, the volume of criticism of Fanёf and Kessel continued to grow. The team played even worse than last season. The defender was called the “main problem of Toronto” [50] , and throughout the season the press constantly published information about his imminent exchange. In March, Fanёf provided management with a list of 12 teams that he is ready to join [51] . Negotiations with Detroit went the farthest , but the deal fell through due to Toronto’s overpriced claims, which caused the defender’s great displeasure [52] . Talk about the exchange almost ended with the arrival of Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock , who, according to experts, could “reload” Fanef’s career [53] [54] .

However, on February 9, 2016, as a result of an exchange involving nine hockey players, the Toronto leadership exchanged Fanef for Ottawa Senators . [55]

For Ottawa, he spent three part-time periods and in 2017 reached the finals of the Eastern Conference, in which the Sens in seven games lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins . On February 13, 2018, he was exchanged at the Los Angeles Kings for Marian Gaborik and Nick Shore. [56]

Los Angeles Kings

Having moved to Los Angeles in the first four matches he scored 3 goals, repeating the result for 53 matches of the season in Ottawa. At the same time, “Kings” won 3 of 4 away matches, losing only in Pittsburgh in the first game of Fanef for “Kings”.

International Career

Fanyofe in the pre-Olympic camp of the national team of Canada (2009)

Fanef's first international tournament was the 2004 World Youth Championships held in Finland [57] . National team coach Mario Durocher assigned the young defender the role of team leader [57] . In the semifinal match against the Czech team, he was removed before the end of the match for a brute force against Rostislav Olesha and could have missed the final, but he avoided disqualification [58] . His team, however, lost the gold medals to the Americans (3: 4) [59] . As a result of the tournament, Dion was included in the All-Star Team [60] .

The next championship brought Canadians the first youth championship gold in 8 years [61] [62] . Confidently passing through the tournament bracket (35-6 goals ratio), the Canadian team defeated the Russian team in the final with a score of 6: 1 [63] . One of the six goals scored and Dion, who entered, as a year ago, in the symbolic team of the tournament [60] . The Canadian team, which won the championship, was called by experts the strongest in history [64] [65] .

After the defeat of “Calgary” in the playoffs of the 2006/07 season, Fanoeuf got the opportunity to make his debut in the adult team of Canada at the World Cup in Moscow [66] . Dion gave eight assists, and his team won gold medals, defeating the Finns in the final [67] . The defender could play in the next championship , but rejected the offer of the coach, explaining that he needed a rest [68] .

Fanehoff was one of the candidates for the Canadian Olympic team to play in Vancouver [69] , but a bad season 2008/09 reduced his chances of joining the team. Despite the fact that the general manager of Canadians Steve Aizerman challenged the player to the pre-Olympic training camp in Calgary [70] , Dion did not get into the final squad.

Fanёf could not get into the national team for the next 3 world championships and returned to the team only for the 2011 championship , and the defender became one of the alternative captains [71] . Dion scored 3 points for performance (all for assists), and the championship ended unsuccessfully for Canadians - they lost in the quarterfinals. The following world championship ended in a similar way - a defeat in the quarterfinal from the Slovak national team , on Fanoeff's account - 2 goals scored.

Game Style

On the site Fanёf stands out, first of all, by the forceful manner of the game. In a vote held by ESPN in 2008, 43% of those surveyed rated him the best power player in the world at the age of 22 years [72] . During the game in the ZHL Fanёf stood out not only for his physical qualities, but also for his composure and ability to play in attack [11] . His coach Brent Sutter compared the hockey player with the famous defender Scott Stevens [11] , and the scouts noted Fanoeuf's poise and ability to play both in defense and in attack [11] . He has a hockey player and leadership qualities - in 2004 he was the captain of the ZHL team in the Subway Super Series and the leader of the Canadian youth team at the 2004 World Youth Championship [57] . In the 2008/09 season and the beginning of the 2009/0 season, Fanoeff was the alternate captain of Calgary, and since June 2010, Captain of Toronto.

In 2008, Fanef’s game in defense was rated with a nomination for the James Norris Trophy, but already in the next season the Canadian began to play on the defensive much worse, he was often criticized. Dion's teammates attributed the deterioration of his game to the fact that he spent a lot of time on ice, an average of 26 minutes 31 seconds per game [28] . Fanef was also criticized for the tough power style of the game. In 2009, in an exhibition match with the New York Islanders , Dion’s clash with Kyle Okposo ended for the last concussion [73] . Often a player is accused of dodging fights. Fanёf himself does not think that he should fight after each collision, but he is ready to do it if necessary. This position is supported by the trainers of Dion.

Beyond Hockey

Dion is married to the famous Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert. [74] The couple married on July 6, 2013 on Prince Edward Island. [75] Their relations are widely covered in the press and at the end of 2008 became the subject of a major scandal [76] [77] [78] . Dallas striker Sean Avery , who had also met with Cuthbert, said before his club’s match with Calgary [76] :

I am very happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. And I also want to note that in the NHL it has become commonplace that hockey players fall in love with the girls I already had.

Original text
I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds.

League commissioner Gary Battman disqualified Avery for 6 matches “due to unacceptable public comments not related to hockey” [76] .

Fannöf is the official representative of the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary and passes tickets to the families of patients for home games “Flames” [79] . Often he appears with Cuthbert at charity evenings [74] .

The Tragically Hip [6] .

Фанёф был официальным лицом видеоигры NHL 09 от EA Sports [81] , снимался в нескольких роликах НХЛ и принимал участие в рекламных акциях лиги [82] .
