Biography

He was born on November 1, 1851 in the family of the painter (1809–1892) and the watercolorist Eloise Kolen (1820–1874), where he received his professional art education. Brother of the artist .

Following in the footsteps of his parents, he proved himself to be a talented creator of historical paintings, he paid much attention to the preparation of theatrical scenery, posters.

Most fully revealed his multifaceted talent in book graphics. In 1884, illustrations for the Sentimental Journey through France and Italy by Lawrence Stern were commended , in 1885 for the novel by Abbot Antoine Francois Prevost, The History of the Cavalier de Grieux and Manon Lescaut , for the Launette publishing house.

World-famous for his 250 illustrations for the anniversary (50 years since the publication) two-volume “ Three Musketeers ”, published in the Parisian publishing house Calmann Levy (1894). Subsequently, he repeatedly turned to the work of Alexander Dumas .

The artist also illustrated the works of Voltaire , Russo , Didro , Moliere , Lesage , Balzac , Maupassant and other writers, playwrights, and philosophers.

He proved himself an expert in the field of fashion history, founded the Costume History Society, wrote and illustrated the Dictionary on Costume History, collected and donated his collection of more than two thousand costumes from different eras to the Gallera Museum (Fashion Museum). He acted as an art consultant in Hollywood .

The artist created his best works at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, created to a very old age.
