Biography
The son of Field Marshal Lieutenant Franz Georg Siegmund von Wimpfen (1735–1816) and his wife Baroness Juliana Theresa von Beselaager.
From the age of 11 he studied at the Theresian Academy .
From November 1, 1786, he served as a cadet in the infantry. The following year he was a warrant officer in the 19th Infantry Regiment. From 1788 - junior lieutenant , from 1789 - lieutenant .
A member of the Austrian troops in the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-1791 .
In 1791, von Wimpfen participated in the invasion of the Austrian troops in the Netherlands , where he was wounded in the battle of Neerwinden ( March 18, 1793 ) and captured. In 1794, he took part in the Battle of Landrecy and the following year was transferred to Italy, where he participated in the Battle of Loano in November.
In 1796, he became a member of the General Staff in the rank of captain . He played a prominent role in the Austrian victory over Andre Massena in March 1799 . Wimpfen was seriously injured, but refused hospitalization and continued the fight.
Then he served as adjutant to Commander-in-Chief Heinrich von Belgard .
After the end of the War, the second coalition was given the position of adjutant in the established service of the Internal Austrian military command (1803) and was promoted to colonel (1805).
He took part in the War of the Third Coalition, participated in the battle of Austerlitz on December 2, 1805 , where he was seriously wounded. For this battle, he was awarded the Military Order of Maria Theresa and the position of Adjutant General to Archduke Karl Teshensky ( 1806 ).
From April 26, 1809 - Major General , from May 7 to August 22, 1809 - Chief of Staff and Quartermaster General of the General Staff. After the conclusion of the Schönbrunn Peace on October 14, 1809, he was given a brigadier position in Bohemia, then in 1810 in Poland and Transylvania.
In 1812, Wimpfen served in the reserve corps in Poland. From September 2, 1813 - field marshal-lieutenant , commander of the division of the 1st Corps of the Bohemian army of Prince Schwarzenberg, fought at Leipzig . During the campaign of 1814, he fought in Champagne against Marshal Augereau, distinguished himself at Troyes, Limon, Lyon and Arcy-sur-Aubé.
From August 1814 to November 1820 - Commander-in-Chief in Silesia. In October 1815 headed the Austrian corps, sent to France. In 1820 he served in the headquarters of the Corps of Count Fremont in Naples, from January 1821 to March 1824 - Commander-in-Chief in Venice, then served as quartermaster-general of the General Staff.
From October 21, 1830 - Field Marshal-General, Commander-in-Chief in Salzburg, December 4, 1844 - Field Marshal, from December 18 of that year - the captain of the Life Guard bodyguards.
Died August 29, 1854 in Vienna.
