ETTs-161 is a chain trench excavator manufactured from 1961 to 1978 by the Myzakyul branch of the Tallinn Excavator Plant based on the MTZ-50 pneumatic wheel tractor. It became a further improvement of the previous models ETN-123 - ETN-124 . The main objective of the machine was the creation of rectangular trenches for laying cables [1] [2] . The abbreviation ETC means the excavator T early C chain, in the index 161 the first two digits indicate the depth of the trench in decimeters (that is, 1.6 meters), the last - model number [3] [4] .
History
In 1959, the production of light trench excavators ETN-123 based on MTZ-5 pneumowheel tractors was launched at the Tallinn Excavator Plant . In 1961, production was moved to Myzaklyuly , where a branch ( Myzaklyuy workshop ) of the parent enterprise was organized. Until 1964, the model ETN-124 based on the MTZ-5 LS / MS tractor was manufactured in Myzakul.
In 1964, the ETN-124 was replaced by a new model, the basic machine for which was the new, more powerful MTZ-50 tractor. Thanks to the increased power of the base machine, it was possible to increase the digging depth from 1.2 to 1.6 meters. The new car received an ETTs-161 index. Production of this model continued until 1978 (by this time the Tallinn Excavator Plant had already been transformed into the Tallex Production Association ). For all years, 6271 cars were manufactured. But already in 1975, the production of the next modification of the excavator began - the ETTs-165 model. Production of the latter (namely, once again an updated version of the ETTs-165A) continued until 1989 [1] [2] .

Technical Features
The ETZ -161 chain trench excavator can work in mineral soils of categories I and II without rocky inclusions and is intended for use in settlements and during field work, when frequent movement of the machine on its own is required. Like the previous models, the excavator is a self-propelled digging machine, equipped with a scraper working body. The working body is mounted on the rear of the base tractor. A bulldozer blade is installed in front of the machine for digging a trench and leveling the soil. The excavator is equipped with a hydraulic creeper . All equipment is hung on the base machine without altering the latter. During operation, the excavator moves along the trench to be torn off, the depth of the trench is regulated by the angle of lowering of the working body. Raising and lowering the working body is carried out using one hydraulic cylinder . The dozer blade is driven by a separate hydraulic cylinder.
From the previous version ( ETN-124 trench excavator), the new excavator was distinguished primarily by a more powerful base tractor , which allowed to increase the depth of the trench to 1.6 meters. The new machine is equipped with a hydraulic transmission of the working stroke, based on the NSh-32 pump and NPA-64 hydraulic motor . A stepless change in the speed of the working stroke allows you to select the optimal working speed when trenching.
The working body is a single row sleeve-roller endless chain located on the frame. The chain is equipped with knives for cutting soil and scrapers to carry it out of the trench to be torn off. By replacing knives and scrapers, you can set the width of the trench at 0.2 and 0.4 meters. The chain goes around the drive sprocket (mounted on the drive gear of the working body) and the guide sprocket equipped with a tensioner. Two support rollers are also located on the frame. The drive of the chain of the working body is carried out from the tractor engine through a special gearbox and the turus shaft. To prevent breakdown of the mechanism when meeting with an insurmountable obstacle in the kinematic chain there is a protective device. At the top of the frame, a rod is fixed with a shoe designed to clean the bottom of the trench to be torn off. The soil is removed from the trench berm using two screw conveyors mounted on the frame in a position determined by the digging depth and driven by the working chain through a three-stage gearbox. A machine can tear trenches along the walls of buildings close to their walls [6] [7] .

The design of the excavator provides for the possibility of installing removable bar equipment for working with frozen soils, but efficient operation of the machine is possible only in a temperate climate [8] .
