Biography
Born on January 4, 1922 in the village of Bytosh (now - Dyatkovo district of the Bryansk region ). After finishing ten classes of the school and the Zhizdrinsk Pedagogical School, he worked as a teacher.
In August 1941, Kurkov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1942 he graduated from the Smolensk Artillery School (evacuated to Irbit). Since October of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By August 1944, Captain Vasily Kurkov commanded the battery of the 261st Guards Cannon Artillery Regiment of the 22nd Guards Heavy Cannon Artillery Brigade of the 3rd Guards Artillery Division of the 5th Artillery Corps of the 5th Army Breakthrough of the 3rd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Lithuanian SSR [1] .
The gunners of Kurkov supported with their fire the actions of rifle units in battles for Kaunas and Vilnius . On August 17, 1944, Kurkov’s battery was one of the first to cross the Shesupe River near the town of Kudirkos-Naumestis and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western bank. His battery successfully reached the State border of the USSR, covering with his fire the actions of infantry [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Captain Vasily Kurkov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .
After the end of the war, Kurkov was sacked. He returned to his native village. He died suddenly on March 14, 1946 [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree and two orders of the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
A street in Bytoshi was named in honor of Kurkov [1] .
