Biography
He was born on February 4 (16), 1867 in Tashkent .
He graduated from the Tashkent Gymnasium in 1886 , and in 1890 - the historical and philological faculty of the Imperial St. Petersburg University . Since 1891 he taught history at the school of K.I. May .
While still a student, Alexander Lipovsky published his works in Turkestan Vedomosti and Slavic Izvestia ; then he collaborated in special scientific journals (“ Journal of the Ministry of Public Education ”, “ News of the Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the Academy of Sciences ”, “ Living Antiquity ”), sent articles of a journalistic nature to “Russian Turkestan”; He took an active part in the journal Literary Bulletin .
In the fall of 1906, Alexander Lavrentievich Lipovsky took over as director of the St. Petersburg school of K.I. May, which, under him, reached its true heyday. However, after the events of October 1917, the school was nationalized and its last fifty-fifth graduation took place on February 24, 1918.
A. L. Lipovsky took an active part in the activities of the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Society (edited its “fact sheet”) and the professional-political “Union of High School Teachers”.
Lipovsky made a significant contribution to the writing of the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary , as well as the Great Encyclopedia , where he posted many articles on the history and literature of the Slavic peoples. Among his publications:

On September 24, 1893 he was married to a graduate of the pedagogical department of the Smolny Institute of Noble Maidens Julia Alexandrovna Ignatovich (1868-1948). In their marriage, they had four sons Boris, Alexander, Vasily, Mikhail and daughter Tatyana (1901-1993). The latter continued the work of her father and devoted her life to pedagogy. All the boys received secondary education at the Karl May school (in the graduating class, they, as the children of the principal, according to the rules established at that time, transferred to another school - in this case, to the Larino gymnasium ). All the sons of Lipovsky fought for the Fatherland on various fronts. Vasily Lipovsky (1898-1919) died in the First World War , a quarter of a century later, during the Great Patriotic War , Major Mikhail Lipovsky (1899-1944) was killed.
He died on January 11, 1942 in besieged Leningrad and was buried on the military site of the Smolensk cemetery , on the banks of the Smolenka River .
