Biography

He made his international debut in 1954; in a match against the German Democratic Republic, he boxed with the German Ulli Nitsche , but lost to him by technical knockout in the third round. In 1956 he became the champion of Czechoslovakia in the heavyweight division and thanks to a series of successful performances he was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the Summer Olympics in Melbourne . At the Olympics, however, in his first match at the tournament with a score of 2: 3 he lost to the American Pete Rademacher , the future Olympic champion.

In 1957, the German boxed at the home European Championships in Prague and won a bronze medal (lost to the Soviet heavyweight Andrei Abramov in the semifinals), repeated this achievement two years later at the European Championship in Lucerne (he could not defeat Englishman David Thomas in the semifinals). Remaining in his weight category the leader of the Czechoslovak national team, the German qualified for the 1960 Olympics in Rome - managed to reach the semi-finals here, after which 1: 4 lost to the Italian Francesco de Piccoli , who eventually became the Olympic champion.

Having received a bronze Olympic medal, the German continued to enter the ring as part of the national team, taking part in all major international tournaments. So, in 1961, he went to the European Championships in Belgrade, where in the quarterfinals he lost on points to the representative of Italy Benito Penne . Two years later, he represented the country at the European Championship in Moscow and finally became the champion of the continent, having defeated all rivals in the heavyweight program. As a favorite, he went to the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo , had high hopes for this tournament, but in the opening match he was knocked out by the Italian Giuseppe Ros - the match ended with the score 1: 4.

Soon after these competitions, Joseph Nemets decided to end his athlete’s career and left the national team. In total, in amateur Olympic boxing, he spent 320 fights, of which 308 ended in victory. After completing his career as a boxer, he worked as a trainer and sports functionary.

He died on September 10, 2013 in his hometown of České Budějovice [1] .
