History

The idea of creating a museum of contemporary art has been widely discussed in the Cracow art community since the beginning of the 21st century. In 2005, the Krakow City Council acquired the bankrupt Krakovsky Electrical Plant Unitra-Telpod, which was called Emailwarenfabrik (DEF) during the Second World War and was known as Schindler’s Factory. In 2005, the mayor of Krakow, Jacek Majrowski, submitted an application to finance a project to create a museum to the Polish Ministry of Culture. In 2007, the territory of the factory was divided into two parts, one of which was transferred to the Krakow Historical Museum , which organized a permanent exhibition "Krakow during the occupation 1939-1945" in it, and the other part was transferred to the future Museum of Modern Art. In 2007, a competition was held during which the project of the museum was selected.

The construction of the museum began in December 2009 and was completed in November 2010. The opening of the Museum of Modern Art took place on May 19, 2011. On this day, the museum demonstrated the exhibitions “History in Art”, “Bibliophilia”, “MOCAK Collection”, “Laureates of the Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation Award”, “Mauricia Gomulitsky's Creativity”, “Madeline Sante Photos” and “Mechislav Porebsky Library” permanent exhibition of the museum.
